About Ditmars Boulevard

Ditmars Boulevard is the spine of upper Astoria — the east-west commercial run that starts at the Hell Gate Bridge over by Astoria Park, threads past Astoria Pool and the old Steinway piano factory, then continues east past the elevated N/W terminus and keeps going all the way to Hazen Street and the LaGuardia perimeter. The character shifts every few blocks. West of 21st Street it is residential and quiet, with the playground crowd and the Astoria Park runners. Between 21st and 31st you hit the density: Greek diners that have been there since the 70s, Brazilian bakeries, a couple of newer wine bars, the Bohemian Hall garden one street south. From 31st Street east — the stretch we are on — it is genuinely mixed: Egyptian bakeries, Stop & Shop, the Ditmars Cinemas, a Bangladeshi grocer, the new specialty coffee shops that opened during the pandemic, and us.

The unit mix on this block is what makes it work as a delivery zone. Six-story pre-war apartment buildings on the corners, walk-ups above the storefronts, and a sprinkle of single-family attached houses on the side streets running off Ditmars. That is a lot of doors within a five-minute drive of one depot — which is why we opened here in the first place.

How delivery to Ditmars actually works

Because we are the depot, Ditmars addresses skip the routing wait that other Astoria blocks see at peak hours. Order goes in on the Dutchie menu, pickers grab it off the shelf, and it is in a driver's hand within ten minutes. Drivers walk the order west or east on Ditmars or cut up 35th, 38th, or 41st Street to reach side-street addresses. Real ETA is usually 20 minutes; we quote 20-30 to absorb double-parked delivery vans on Ditmars during the lunch rush. 21+ ID check happens at your door — not in the lobby — and cash, debit, or pre-loaded account credit all work.

One quirk: the elevated N/W structure runs over 31st Street, which makes that intersection slow during evening rush. If you are ordering from the west side of Ditmars (closer to Astoria Park), evening orders sometimes arrive faster than lunchtime orders because the trucks unloading at Stop & Shop have cleared out.

If you live in the six-story pre-war on the corner of 36th and Ditmars, you are literally next door — this is your block dispensary. Same for the walk-ups above the Greek diner across the street and the new build on 37th. Within a ten-minute walk west: the Astoria Park crowd, the rowhouses on 23rd Ave, the apartments above the Bohemian Hall. Within a ten-minute walk east: the side streets running off Ditmars toward LaGuardia, the Astoria Heights coop buildings on 31st Ave, the new condominium developments going up along 23rd Ave between 41st and 47th.

Transit on this corridor

The Astoria-Ditmars Blvd station (end of the N/W line) sits two blocks west at 31st Street. Manhattan-bound trains run every 4-6 minutes during rush. The Q19 bus runs crosstown on Ditmars itself, the Q69 cuts up 21st Street, the Q100 runs Astoria Blvd-Ditmars to Rikers and back, and the Q102 connects up to Astoria Heights. The Q70-SBS to LaGuardia airport picks up two blocks south on 31st Street and gets you to the terminal in twelve minutes.
