The land was a marsh called Trains Meadow until 1909, when the Queensboro Corporation bought 325 acres and began building garden apartments around shared courtyards. That plan is why the neighborhood looks the way it does. The original district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, and a smaller city-designated historic district covers almost 600 buildings from 76th to 88th Streets. The Wikipedia article on Jackson Heights has the full development story.
Travers Park, on 34th Avenue between 77th and 78th Streets, opened in 1948 and was rebuilt with a great lawn and a performance area. It also hosts a greenmarket every Sunday morning, year-round.
Where You Can Consume
Travers Park belongs to NYC Parks, and the city bans smoking and vaping in its parks, beaches and pedestrian plazas. See the NYC Parks smoke-free rules for the exact scope. Plan to use cannabis at home instead.
