This week, our restaurant highlight is a bit outside of Astoria, but we promise you it’s worth the short trip to Ridgewood. Whether you’re looking for a killer breakfast burrito or a thick cut, deep fried SPAM grilled cheese sandwich, or even a Japanese spicy chicken katsu sandwich where the bun resembles something like a tiny hat, they have you covered. They also have a wide variety of classic Japanese food options, too! The real reason to go is the friendly staff. No matter our mood, a visit to this quaint little unsuspecting mini mart slanging top-tier snacks and sandos brings a genuine smile to our faces. We think you’ll feel the same after your first bite. Another fun thing about Mama Yoshi is that it isn’t just a restaurant. In fact, it isn’t a restaurant at all. Sure, it serves up delicious Japanese and Japanese-inspired dishes day after day, but at its heart, it’s a small convenience store. Bottled drinks, packaged Japanese snacks, and grab and go favorites like SPAM Musubi, Onigiri, Japanese sandos, and so much more. If you visit, bring a friend. Get the SPAM grilled cheese sandwich and the Spicy Chicken Katsu sando. Split them both, and don’t forget a couple bevs to go with the meal. Then grab some fun Japanese snacks for later before you hit the shops in Ridgewood on your way home!

WHAT TO DO IN NYC THIS WEEK!

1. Try Stand Up at Open Mic Night - Q.E.D. Astoria - Wed, 6pm & 9:45pm (Recurring)

Have you always thought you had what it takes to be a famous stand up comedian? So have a lot of people, and most of them have been wrong. That’s not to say that you are, though. Just that most people are. Lucky for everyone, good or bad, open mic stand up comedy is almost always a fun time for those performing and those in the audience. Q.E.D. Astoria has been consistently cranking out laughs in the Astoria neighborhood for years with no sign of stopping soon! They’ve got shows featuring world famous comics as well as local talents that are just starting to make a name for themselves in the New York comedy scene. From scripted shows to improvised, musical comedy, stand up showcases, and so much more! They also serve snacks and beer so you can indulge as you laugh the night away with friends. Think you might want to try out doing comedy yourself? No problem! They host several open mic nights per week, and on Wednesdays (and Thursdays) there are even two per night so no matter your schedule, there’s no excuse not to take the stage. You know, if you’ve got the itch. Test out your stand up chops tomorrow night at 6pm or 9:15pm! Make sure to show up around 30 minutes early to sign up for the mic and chop it up with your fellow comedians. Look at you. Steps from stardome. 1. Stuff your face with Sausage and Peppers at the Feast of San Genaro (Sep 11 - 21)

Ah, the Feast! The time is once again here for insanely packed crowds exchanging elbows in a frantic hunt for deep fried, powdered sugar-covered doughy goodness all while being carried by their noses in a thousand different directions by wafting scents of sizzling Italian sausage and perfectly caramelized onions and peppers. It truly is something to behold. If you haven’t had the pleasure of donning your battle gear to trudge through the bewildered masses past Ferris Wheels, carnival games, and overpriced sour lemonades just to taste the sweet victory of a twenty dollar sausage on a hero with sweaty onions and peppers piled perfectly on top then what are you doing with your life? Honestly. And, if you don’t automatically head to the zeppole cart to wash that sandwich down with at least a half cup of fryer oil dripping straight from the bag then, I hate to break it to you, but you simply have not been living. All of this to say that while the Feast of San Genaro can be crowded and pricey, and the food is definitely not something you’d want to make a habit of eating regularly, it’s still a part of what makes this city so great. It’s also home to some of the city’s best food options both during and not during the feast. So, from Sep 11th through the 21st, head to Little Italy to celebrate the Feast of San Genaro with the rest of the city! No, seriously. We’ll all be there. See you then!
