Just when you thought the rain was gone, it’s back again! This time, it’s the Hawaiian Rain flower from Cookies. When life (and weather) is unpredictable, it’s nice to have something consistent, and high quality you can count on. Cookies flower definitely comes correct, and leaves you wanting more but worried about what will happen if you smoke more. But you will. It’s just that good. We also have some other strains of their flower you can check out when you come in and get the one (or multiple ) that sound good to you!

WEEKLY RESTAURANT(S) _HIGH_LIGHT (PICK YOUR OWN SEAFOOD)

If you are a seafood lover and aren’t regularly coming to Astoria to grub down at one of the many pick-your-own seafood spots, you’re not living! This neighborhood is one of the best in the country for fresh, delicious seafood. Most of them let you look and pick your own, one of them even lets you pick your own right out of the bin (gloves required, obviously). There is no better way to ensure you get the best possible quality than to pick it yourself and here in Astoria, you have tons of places where you can do just that!

Starting with Hamido, you probably are already aware that they have a new location just steps away from their older (still operational) original spot. They now have way more space for delicious seafood options as well as a ton more seating (including patio seating when weather permits) so it’s a great spot for a date! Next up, Astoria Seafood. For a spot that lets you pick your own seafood (by hand) this place cooks and serves with Michelin level quality. Also, it’s great for parties as they have a relaxed BYOB policy! Finally, one of the many Egyptian seafood spots along Steinway, we decided to shine a spotlight on AbuQir. Like most of the seafood spots around here, you can pick which fish, shrimp, octopus, etc. you want, then they cook it up for you on the spot. It has lots of seating too so it’s great for larger groups or parties. Whichever you choose, seafood in Astoria is just the right way to do it. Prices be damned!

WHAT TO DO IN QUEENS THIS WEEK

1. Decide (Once & For All) Which Souvlaki Truck Has The Best Skewer & Sauce

Astoria is graced with a lot of amazing Greek food options. You’ll see the evidence of this all around in happy customers walking down the street carrying glistening skewers of pork or chicken and fumbling to open their mandatory Tzatziki dip. More often than not, these heavenly skewers were purchased at one of Astoria’s many amazing greek food trucks. If you ask three locals which is best, you’re likely to get three different answers. From their homemade dips and sauces, to how they grill their meats, each place puts its own spin on flavor and all of them are amazing. The answer here is which is your favorite? Not familiar with the plentiful places to get a souvlaki stick in Astoria? Start with what many consider the main three options.

Souvlaki Lady, tucked right off of Ditmars Blvd. serves up what many people say is the best souvlaki in the city. We love her food, too. But we love all of them. Next up, try King Souvlaki. Right on the corner of Ditmars and Steinway. Their fries are cooked in extra virgin olive oil and go perfect with their lemon juice, salt, and oregano dusted chicken, pork, or sausage skewers. Never forget the Tzatziki at any of these places, by the way. They all make their own and all of them are delicious and unique. Definitely an important part of deciding which spot is your favorite. Finally, Fanky’s Souvlaki. They have more options than a lot of other souvlaki trucks including skewers of not only pork or chicken but also beef, lamb, and shrimp! Try all three spots and make the decision for yourself. Which is best? While deciding, enjoy walking around our beautiful neighborhood and meeting the lovely people that make the Astoria community so great!

2. Walk Off Your Souvlaki Sticks In Astoria Park While The Weather Still Permits

All of that scientific comparison and Souvlaki sampling has surely got you feeling full and one of the best ways to feel better when you’ve had one (or five) too many souvlaki sticks is to take a nice, long walk. Maybe we’re biased, but we happen to think that Astoria Park is one of the best places to do it. Unfortunately, the seasons are changing once again and our sweet little sun baked neighborhood will once again be battered with rain and snow as fall and winter rapidly approach. The good news? You’ve still got time! The sun is still shining, albeit less frequently than a month or two ago. Take the time to get out there and enjoy it while you still can! Walk, jog, run, crabwalk, whatever your thing is. Do it at the park. Ok, well not whatever your thing is. Keep it respectful so everyone can enjoy the park too. Take in the water (metaphorically) and enjoy the last few markets and food festivals of the early fall. You never know what you’ll see (or hear or smell or taste) at Astoria Park!

3. Spend a Full Day Wandering Around Flushing Meadows Corona Park

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if a park had everything? Wonder no more. Flushing Meadows Corona Park is that park! It has everything from daily food vendors selling restaurant quality food at pennies on the dollar to weekly markets and even the space ships from Men In Black. Ok, so maybe they aren’t actually space ships and sure, they’re constantly under construction. But they’re super cool relics from the World’s Fair back in the 1960s. Whether you just want to relax in the shade, join a game of soccer or volleyball, do a street food crawl, or just take a walk, this park has pretty much everything you could want. Oh, did we mention there is also a zoo, a science museum, the Queens Museum, and even more there? Yeah, it’s a pretty great park and it’s not super far from Astoria. It’s also close to a Home Depot. You know, in case that’s important to you. Not sure why it would be, but you do you. No judgement here!
