What Is Roosevelt Island?
Roosevelt Island is a narrow island in the East River that belongs to Manhattan, about 2 miles long and 147 acres in area, with 11,722 residents counted in the 2020 census. The Lenape called it Minnehanonck, the Dutch knew it as Hog Island, and it later carried the names Blackwell's Island and Welfare Island while hospitals and prisons filled it. The state's Urban Development Corporation leased it from the city in 1969 and renamed it for Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1973, then built it out as two residential communities, Northtown and Southtown.
