About Steinway Street

Steinway Street runs north-south through the middle of Astoria — Astoria Boulevard at the top, all the way down past 35th Avenue. It is named for William Steinway, who built the piano factory and the surrounding Steinway Village company town up in the northeast corner of the neighborhood in the 1870s. Today the street is two distinct personalities stacked on top of each other. North of 28th Ave it is the Little Egypt corridor: shisha cafes that don't open until 7pm and don't close until 2 or 3, halal butchers, the Ariha Sweets bakery, Layali Beirut, El Khayam, Sabry's seafood. South of 28th Ave it shifts into the mall-feeder run — Macy's, Target, TJ Maxx, the AMC theater — and then back into apartments below 30th Ave.

The unit mix on Steinway itself is mostly five- and six-story walk-ups above storefronts, with the bigger pre-war buildings sitting on the cross-streets (28th Ave, 30th Ave, 31st Ave) one or two doors deep. The Long Island Rail Road right-of-way runs along 31st Street one block west, which keeps Steinway feeling like a contained commercial main street.

How delivery to Steinway works

Drivers take Astoria Blvd west out of our depot or cut down 35th Street, hit Steinway, and run the corridor. The biggest single variable is the BQE entrance ramp at 31st Street, which can stall the Astoria Blvd run during the 5-6pm window — we usually route through 30th Ave instead. The other thing to know: Steinway St between 25th Ave and 28th Ave gets busy on Thursday through Saturday nights when the hookah lounges fill up, so deliveries to the upstairs apartments in that stretch are sometimes met at street level instead of the lobby. 21+ ID check, same as always.

Transit on this corridor

Steinway St M/R is the heart of it — Manhattan-bound runs down Queens Blvd to Roosevelt Ave and into Midtown. The Q102 bus runs the length of Steinway and is actually faster than the M after 9pm. The Q19 picks up at the Astoria Blvd end. From the bottom of Steinway (35th Ave) you are a four-minute walk to the 46 St M/R stop or a ten-minute walk to the 36 Av N/W. Steinway connects you to lower Manhattan in 28 minutes and to Forest Hills in 18.
