Dispensary near me within 5 mi vocabulary:
What Should You Know Before You Go to a Dispensary?
Before visiting a dispensary near me within 5 mi, a little preparation ensures a smooth experience. This means understanding age requirements, what ID to bring, and the difference between medical and recreational cannabis. At Terp Bros, we also champion programs like CAURD (Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary) that support social equity, ensuring our presence positively impacts the community.
Here’s a handy 5-step checklist for choosing a local dispensary that fits your needs:
Are you 21 or older?
The golden rule for adult-use cannabis in New York is simple: you must be 21 or older. This is a legal requirement, and any licensed dispensary, like our Legal Dispensary Astoria, will verify your age.
You’ll need a valid, government-issued photo ID, such as:
- A state-issued driver’s license or non-driver ID card
- A U.S. or foreign passport
- A military ID card
Ensure your ID is current and clearly shows your date of birth. Out-of-state IDs are generally accepted, but having a backup is always a good idea. This age verification process is in place for everyone’s safety and legal compliance.
Medical vs. Recreational Dispensaries
New York has both medical and adult-use (recreational) dispensaries, with key differences in access, products, and taxes.
- Recreational Access: Adult-use dispensaries like Terp Bros are open to anyone 21+ with a valid ID, offering a wide range of products.
- Medical Patient Access: Medical dispensaries serve patients in New York’s Medical Cannabis Program. A medical cannabis card is required. Ask the dispensary about its program rules.
- Product Differences: Medical dispensaries may carry a different product range, while recreational shops focus on broad appeal with diverse strains and product types.
- Tax Implications: Recreational cannabis purchases include state excise taxes that fund community reinvestment, while medical purchases are often exempt from some of these taxes.

We focus on Premium Cannabis Strains across all categories to ensure a top-quality experience.
Choosing Products by Strain Type and Format
You can choose products based on strain type, format, and flavor. Tell a budtender what you are looking for and we can help you find a match.
- Sativa strains are one of the main strain types, and they are often described as daytime picks.
- Indica varieties are another main strain type, and they are often described as evening picks.
- Hybrid strains offer the best of both worlds, with balanced effects that can be custom to your needs.
Understanding THC vs. CBD is also key. THC produces the “high,” while CBD is non-psychoactive. Products come in various ratios, so check the label. If you’re new, our philosophy is “start low and go slow,” especially with edibles. Our team is here to help, and our First Time Cannabis Buyers Guide offers more guidance.

How can I consume cannabis responsibly?
Responsible consumption is key to a positive experience. Here are our top tips:
- Start low and go slow: Begin with a small dose, especially when trying a new product like edibles, and wait to see how you feel before consuming more.
- Read the label: Pay attention to the THC and CBD content.
- Never drive impaired: Cannabis affects judgment and reaction time. Never drive or operate heavy machinery after consuming.
- Store securely: Keep all cannabis products out of reach of children and pets in child-proof containers.
