Brightwaters is an incorporated village in the southwest of the Town of Islip, and the 2020 census counted 3,181 residents. The T.B. Ackerson Company, a developer known for its Brooklyn projects, built it up in the early twentieth century.
The village exists because residents objected to how the area was taxed. While still unincorporated land in Islip, they complained about paying for private subscriptions to services they thought the town should provide. Islip's town officials received the petition on September 20, 1916, and Brightwaters turned into a village on November 30 of that same year.

The Canal District is everything south of Montauk Highway, where the Brightwaters Canal runs.
