Deer Park fills the northeast corner of Babylon's territory, in pine barrens, and the 2020 census listed 28,837 people. Charles Wilson founded the settlement in 1853 by starting a big, productive farm, roughly eleven years after trains first arrived in 1842. Farming defined the town for most of its past. It carried the nickname fruit basket for New York State and was also noted for growing dahlias, and the economy only stopped being agricultural after the post-World War II boom arrived.
Industry came in small doses before 1940, and the Golden Pickle Works prepared pickles here starting in 1902. Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation put a factory in town in 1956. A local legend said President John Quincy Adams spent his summers in Deer Park. It was disproved: a Baptist minister who shared the president's name lived here, and that is the likely source of the story.
Deer Park touches Wyandanch and Wheatley Heights on the west, Dix Hills on the north, Brentwood and Baywood on the east, and North Babylon to the south. Tanger Outlets at the Arches opened on October 22, 2008, a $300 million shopping center. The LIRR has served the area since 1842 through the Deer Park station, although since 1987 the station has stood mostly in Baywood and Brentwood. Our nearest rail stops are Wyandanch station, about 1.6 miles away, and Deer Park station, about 1.9 miles away.
