Fenced Land, Fishing Village, Summer Resort: Canarsie's Layers
Wikipedia traces the name Canarsie to a Lenape word meaning fenced area. After Europeans arrived, it was first a fishing community and then a summer resort around the turn of the 20th century. In the late 1930s and early 1940s the resorts were gone, and the area grew as a suburb.
The Dutch arrived early. In 1636, settlers founded the town of Achtervelt, later called Amersfoort and then Flatlands, and bought 15,000 acres around Jamaica Bay. Pieter Claesen Wyckoff built a house in Flatlands around 1652, and it still stands on Clarendon Road and is thought to be the oldest building in New York State.
