The 1650s mark the start of East New York, then called the Town of New Lots. The name we use today came later. In 1835, a Connecticut merchant named John Pitkin bought the land lying north of New Lots Avenue and opened a shoe factory at Williams Street and Pitkin Avenue. Pitkin chose the name East New York, either to sell the area as a rival to New York City or to signal that it was the region's eastern gateway.
Railroads and city borders followed. The Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad ran through the area from 1836, and a stop in East New York was added by 1844. Brooklyn annexed the community as its 26th Ward in 1886, and in 1898 it joined New York City.
Linden Boulevard, Pennsylvania Avenue and Atlantic Avenue serve as its main through streets. The Queens borough line marks the eastern edge and Jamaica Bay the southern one. A railway town grew up at the spot where the Brooklyn and Rockaway Beach Railroad of 1865 linked the LIRR's Atlantic Branch to Canarsie, a place later known as Broadway Junction.
