Southold, a census-designated place, roughly matches the hamlet bearing that name inside the Town of Southold; the 2010 census put it at 5,748 people. Its history reaches back to the first English settlement in what became New York State, although that claim rests partly on a technicality. New Netherland still belonged to the Dutch, yet Southold's section of Long Island was then governed as part of Connecticut.
English Puritans from New Haven, Connecticut, settled here on October 21, 1640, led by the Reverend John Youngs. Peter Hallock was the first to step ashore after lots were drawn. The land had been bought in the summer of 1640 from the Corchaugs, whose name for the place was Yenicott.
The jurisdiction stayed with New Haven until 1662 and with Connecticut until 1674. In 1673, when the Dutch took over New York, the eastern towns refused to submit and repelled Dutch forces with help from Connecticut. Governor Sir Edmund Andros then threatened to strip residents of their land rights, and they gave way by 1676.
The origin of the name is debated. Some believe it misspells Southwold, the English coastal town in Suffolk, and John Youngs was born and raised there. An area in the New York hamlet is called Reydon Shores, after the village next to Southwold that was the home of Youngs's wife. A different theory says the name means a holding south of New Haven. Many older buildings fall within the Southold Historic District, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1997. The area totals 11.3 square miles, with some of it water, and Southold station is about 0.8 miles away on our list.
