Greenport is a village on the North Fork of Long Island, within the Town of Southold, and the 2010 census counted 2,197 people. Settlers first arrived in 1682, and Greenport incorporated in 1838. Greenport was a major port with a strong fishing and whaling industry, and it was also a shipbuilding village. Only a handful of commercial fishing vessels work out of it now, and tourism has grown considerably.
Since 1844 Greenport has been the Long Island Rail Road's easternmost stop on the North Fork. Many of the village's older structures sit in the Greenport Village Historic District, which earned a National Register listing in 1986.
Greenport station is about 0.2 miles away. It is the eastern terminus of the LIRR Main Line, and a shuttle with stops in other North Fork towns runs to Ronkonkoma, where riders connect to trains for New York City. Suffolk County Transit's S92 bus runs from the Orient Point Ferry Terminal to East Hampton by way of Riverhead, and the Hampton Jitney's North Fork Line also serves the village.
Riders arriving by train or bus can transfer to the North Ferry to Shelter Island, and from there to another ferry to North Haven.
Summer visitors come for a locally famous carousel from the 1920s near the waterfront. The East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation, which holds the annual Maritime Festival each September, is housed in the old Greenport station house, while the Railroad Museum of Long Island occupies the former freight house. Visitors also come for the vineyards, with more than 40 of them across the East End. Claudio's, in a building more than 150 years old, was the oldest single-family-owned restaurant until its sale in 2018.
