Wyandanch takes its name from Chief Wyandanch, a leader of the Montaukett people in the 1600s. The area carried other names before Wyandanch. The area was called Half Way Hollow Hills and then West Deer Park, and the Long Island Rail Road chose Wyandanch in 1903 so that travelers would stop mixing up the West Deer Park and Deer Park stops. The 2020 census counted 12,990 residents.
The settlement grew from a station. West Deer Park opened on the LIRR in 1875, and the present station occupies that same spot. Older still is Jacob Conklin's Pirate House, built in 1710 and remembered as the first house in what became the town of Babylon.
Twice residents tried to form a village. A 1950s proposal for a single village called Half Hollow Hills would have joined Wyandanch with Dix Hills, Melville and Sweet Hollow, and in the 1980s Wyandanch tried to incorporate by itself. Both attempts failed, and it stays an unincorporated hamlet under Babylon.
Drivers reach Wyandanch from Southern State Parkway Exit 36 or from the Long Island Expressway at Exit 50. The community lies on a glacial outwash plain made of sandy, thin soils, and the ground slopes gently toward Belmont Lake State Park. On our station list, Wyandanch station is about 0.8 miles away and Pinelawn station is about 1.6 miles away.

It honors Chief Wyandanch, a Montaukett leader. The Long Island Rail Road adopted the name in 1903 to end confusion between two nearby station names.
