Jamrock Jerk (Ozone Park)

Jamaican food is some of the most delicious on the planet. If you haven’t tried it yet, you absolutely need to give it a shot. You will not be disappointed! A great spot to try out your first taste is Jamrock Jerk. They have an amazing restaurant and a number of food trucks around the city serving up mouthwatering Jamaican staples to hungry customers every day! Whether you go for the Jerk pork or chicken, the amazing sides, or just to try a bit of everything to see what you like, you’ll be glad that you went! We recommend (for the first timers) to get the classics. Jerk chicken, rice and peas, maybe a side salad or some bread. Make sure you don’t tell them you want it spicy unless you can actually handle your spice because these guys do not mess around. The spices kick, the flavors punch. Eating here is like getting jumped in the best way. In fact, we’re confident you’ll be back for round two! If you do find yourself coming back again, make sure you try their creamy and delicious mac and cheese as well as their lesser ordered (but still amazingly delicious) Jerk pork. The truth is, no matter what you choose when you come here, you’ll leave with a full belly and a smile from ear to ear.

Ayat Astoria

Living in a city with food from every imaginable culture is a blessing and a curse sometimes. Sure, you have an unlimited number of food options from every culture under the sun. Because of that, you can choose to try something new for almost every meal and never repeat things. However, a seemingly unlimited number of options isn’t always the best thing. We all know the dreaded feeling of opening up Netflix with no show or movie in mind, then scrolling for hours only to settle on one of the few things you always end up watching anyway. The food scene in Queens can be similar. Sure, you could get anything, but it’s a daunting task to find something new all the time, so we end up falling back to our favorites. The local pizza spot, the halal cart on the corner, etc. One cuisine we think is worth trying if you haven’t yet is Palestinian food. Lucky for you, there is an amazing new Palestinian spot right here in Astoria that is serving up Middle Eastern comfort food called Ayat. From fresh hummus and babaganoush to traditional group dishes designed for sharing like Mashawy or Maklouba. Even their appetizers are fantastic! Falafel with tahini and pickles, Beefy Kibbeh, fried Halloumi cheese, even wings! No matter what you choose, you’ll be planning your second visit before you finish your first. Q.E.D. ASTORIA

Comedy is one of the oldest traditions and forms of storytelling on the planet. For centuries people have gathered in groups to discuss things that collectively brought them joy or made them think about things in new ways. Sure, it wasn’t always called comedy. We’re sure there have been countless names for the act of making others laugh with words, but we’re sticking with the one we have today. If you are a comedy fan of any kind, you should definitely check out Q.E.D. here in Astoria! They have shows most nights, from improv to stand up showcases, even scripted performances and special in house events of all kinds. The kicker? The people who run the place are amazing, kind, and supportive of the comedians that perform there. That is a rare thing in today’s comedy scene. This place is fun, inclusive, serves snacks and cold beer, and is an awesome place to add to your list of spots to kick it here in Astoria. Not that any of our lists for places to hang out in Astoria were lacking. Next time you stop in to Q.E.D. let them know we sent you their way!

SHOWTIME SHOUTOUT

Q.E.D. LATE NIGHT OPEN MIC, 3/7, 11PM

Not sure when is a good time to visit Q.E.D. to check out one of their shows? One show we know all of the comedians would appreciate attendance for is their late night open mic. Since the show starts at eleven, it often doesn’t get the same kind of turnout that some of the earlier shows do. If you’re unfamiliar, an open mic is when comedians of all kinds and all experience levels take turns testing out new jokes. For some, it may be their first time on stage ever. In fact, if you’ve ever considered trying out comedy yourself, an open mic is the perfect setting. All of the comedians are aware that there are newcomers performing so, more often than not, they are overwhelmingly supportive. For others performing, they may have paid shows coming up and are at the open mic to test new material before taking it to a larger show or venue. Regardless, open mic night comedy shows are a great time and a fun way to spend a cold Friday night somewhere warm and fun! The kind folks over at Q.E.D.
