Weekly Restaurant Highlight - Toodles to Tootles (& French) in Astoria

Today is a sad day for Astoria food lovers. It pains us to be the bearer of bad news, but it's only right that you hear it now while you still have a chance to say goodbye. That's right, Tootles & French, the amazing wine bar and restaurant across the street from us here on Ditmars in Astoria is closing its doors in roughly a week. They have changed their hours and limited their menu, but still go. Whatever they have to offer, including their service and smiles, is worth going to experience one last time (or for the first time). This week, we pay our respects to the once 'Best New Restaurant in America' and highlight some of the amazing dishes that have brought us so much joy and will truly be missed.

• First off, let's just get this out of the way. Their chopped cheese sandwich, while not being a classic or traditional rendition, was one of the best sandwiches in the city. Freshly ground steak for each sandwich, blended with onions and stretchy, gooey cheese, then topped with a house made jalapeno aioli and laid gently between a warm, buttered and grilled ciabatta roll. A festival for the senses, and perfectly paired with truffle parmesan fries.
• Next up, a controversial but delicious pick. Their appetizers were all amazing. From the chicken and cauliflower bites to the cheese plate, but one stood above the rest as the most unique app on the menu. The fried olives. Green olives dipped in a perfectly seasoned batter and then fried to a golden brown crunchy exterior and served with an emulsified pear puree sauce. Absolutely bonkers pairing, but it worked on every level.
• Finally, a dish that holds a special place in our hearts and one that almost perfectly embodied summer in one bite. The rabbit meatball pasta. Peppers and onions, sauteed in a rich and creamy sauce with perfectly seared, lean rabbit meatballs that are spiced to the absolute perfect levels. A unique and flavorful dish that will truly be missed.

No matter what you were celebrating, or if you were just going out to grab a quick bite, Tootles and the people who work there were what made it truly special. The restaurant as well as the people who made it what it was will be dearly missed. Ashes to ashes and all that. However, there is still time to say goodbye! Stop in before the doors close for good to try some snacks and drinks and see what the hype was all about!

Weekly Restaurant Highlight - True Flavors Halal Caribbean Cuisine & Roti Shop (Ozone Park)

Caribbean food is as good as it gets. We aren't saying that it's the best cuisine in the world. However, we do think there is an argument to be made for that top spot. From roti to doubles, the curry, the rice, everything. Name something delicious they don't have in Caribbean cuisine. See? You can't do it. Now, something even harder to do. Name something at True Flavors that isn't absolutely delicious. Not a chance. It's all amazing and delicious and seasoned to perfection.

If you love doubles, you need to check this place out. If you love baked mac and cheese, you need to check this place out. If you love food in general, you need to check this place out. Small Business Spotlight - Rudy's Hobby & Art (Astoria)

Some places are like portals into another time. A physical place that transports you to another world the second you cross the threshold. Rudy's is one of those places. A magical world of the past where hobbies not only existed, but thrived! Here, you can find everything from model trains to figurine paint kits and everything between. We've been a handful of times and here are the best three things we've found (so far).

First up, a scale model of a UFO hovering over a barn and abducting a poor, unsuspecting cow. Next, a scale model of a Trojan Horse. Yup, a Trojan Horse you build yourself, and then fill with tiny soldiers. We're assuming you need one of these if you're trying to sneak in and take over your hobbyist buddy's scale model of the city of Troy. We think that might make us Odysseus, but we aren't entirely sure. Whatever you need it for, it's super cool! Finally, the coolest thing we've found at Rudy's is Rudy himself. He knows all there is to know about every product in the store and is eager to share his knowledge!

He is a great guy, running a great small business that is an integral part of what makes Astoria what it is. That's something so special, a fifteenth Dunkin could never touch it. That means it has to stay, and for it to stay, we need to shop there.
