Weekly Restaurant Highlight - NEW! The Corner House (Astoria)

Alright, we hear you already. Almost a year of newsletters featuring vetted restaurant recs, and now an untested new spot? What can we say? There are only so many meals in a week and only so many of those can be at places we've never been. Money and time and all of the reasons you're already aware of. However, what we can say about The Corner House is that we have thoroughly stalked their social media presence and read through comments from real customers that lead us to believe that everything about this spot would make it a prime candidate for the restaurant highlight section. We've also been there for drinks, and got some unobstructed views of the inside of the kitchen. And we aren't about to gatekeep a spot that has all of the signs of a delicious new spot to grab a bite in your neighborhood simply because we haven't eaten there just yet. Instead, we're going to walk you through what we would order and why if we were going there today, never having tried their food.

First up, skip the mac and cheese. We know, shocker. It has nothing to do with a lack of love for cheese covered noodles. We are human, after all. Our reason is simple. Mac and cheese is too easy to prepare in batches and reheat. If you're paying for a meal, get something that has to be made fresh. That is not to say that theirs isn't. It might be the best mac and cheese in the world. We just think there are better, more reliable ways to check a restaurant's quality.

Our rec for this menu having not been there would be the steak sandwich. We've seen it being made and can attest to its freshness. Prefer your beef more ground? Great! A burger is one of the best ways to test the food quality of a new spot. It's simple but has so many ways it could go wrong. Theirs looks amazing and definitely worth at least trying. The fish and chips also look to be fresh and hot when served. At least from the bar where we've had our only opportunity to scope out the food like a creep from across the room. Weekly Restaurant Highlight - Bowl Bites (Ozone Park)

Do you love Chipotle but wish they had bolder, more eclectic flavors and protein options? Look no further than Bowl Bites in Ozone Park. People online call it the Caribbean Chipotle. Locals call it fire. Whatever you decide to nickname Bowl Bites, one thing remains the same. They bring bold, spicy, delicious flavors to the build your own bowl restaurant concept.

Start with a base of rice and beans or rice and peas. Then add your protein. The options are plentiful and each one is more delicious than the last. Then, add toppings and sauces. The toppings include fresh salad ingredients as well as Caribbean classics. We highly recommend the Jerk Chicken bowl over rice and peas with salad and any of their spicy sauce options. They also offer sandwiches, smoothies, and so much more! You'll be asking yourself why you ever even went to that other build your own bowl spot. What was their name again? Who cares? You got Bowl Bites now! Just make sure you don't actually bite the bowl. As far as we know, they aren't edible.

Small Business Spotlight - Gotham Thrift (Ridgewood)

You've likely been to a hundred different thrift stores in your life. Or, maybe you've lived your entire life in the lap of luxury and you've never seen one in your life. Regardless of your tax bracket, Gotham Thrift is an amazing thrift store in Ridgewood that offers amazing deals on vintage clothing, furniture, accessories, records, comic books, and oddities that have to be seen to be believed. Lucky for you, you can visit yourself and grab a piece of history to rent until it fully serves its purpose in your life, at which point it might end up coming back to Gotham.

There is just something about a thrift store that reminds us of the cyclical nature of the world. Nothing owned, only borrowed. Whether you need a new (old) piece of furniture, an addition to the record collection (we see you, hipsters), or just want a place to spend an hour or so looking at things you never could have imagined existed, Gotham is the place for you.
