Orient is a hamlet at the eastern end of Long Island's North Fork, and the 2020 census counted 999 residents. Orient and Orient Point are often used interchangeably, but Orient Point is the physical tip of the fork while Orient is the hamlet that contains it.
The hamlet was first named Poquatuck, for the Native American tribe living along the inland waterways, and later Oyster Ponds, for the nearby oyster beds. The Oysterponds name once covered both Orient and East Marion, with Orient known as Lower Neck and East Marion as Upper Neck, until the two separated in 1836. East Marion took its name from the Revolutionary War general Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. The name Orient reflects the place's easternmost position.
Five families were granted land by the English king in the 17th century, and the surnames Vail, Tuthill, Latham, Glover, Terry and King still turn up in local families. During the American Revolution, British commanders including Benedict Arnold used Orient as a base for raids on Connecticut, and one of Arnold's headquarters was a tavern run by the Vail family on today's Village Lane. A National Register of Historic Places listing in 1976 covers many of the older structures as the Orient Historic District.
Ferry service has tied Orient Point to southern New England for more than a century. The Cross Sound Ferry now runs a vehicle and passenger ferry between Orient Point and New London, Connecticut. Plum Island, across Plum Gut from Orient Point, is home to a USDA lab, and many residents work there or at businesses farther west.
The summer population swells to well over 1,000. The hamlet has a post office, a country store, a gas station and a few seasonal tourist stands but no commercial center, so residents rely on nearby Greenport for everyday needs.
Anyone in Orient typing weed delivery near me should know that Terp Bros Ozone Park, 135-26 Cross Bay Blvd, sits about 87.5 miles away in a straight line and the store promises no arrival time. ZIP 11957 has a $200 minimum. Any order over $100 is delivered free. Payment is prepaid with Dutchie Pay. A driver will check a valid government ID for 21+ at the door. The address must be a residence or private business, and OCM rules rule out parks, beaches, public spaces and cars, so a ferry dock does not count.
