Hauppauge is a hamlet split between the Town of Islip and the Town of Smithtown, in the western part of Suffolk County. Riverhead is the official county seat, yet many county government offices are based in Hauppauge anyway.
The name comes from an Algonquin word meaning "sweet waters." Local Native American tribes drew their fresh drinking water here, since the water near Lake Ronkonkoma could not be drunk. Historian Simeon Wood dated the first house in greater Hauppauge to 1731, and Thomas Wheeler's family began the settlement of Hauppauge proper before 1753. The place carried the Wheeler name until the 1860s, when Hauppauge came back into use.
The Hauppauge Methodist Church that stands today went up in 1812 on land the Wheeler family donated. The King's Highway, laid out by New York's colonial legislature in 1702, made Hauppauge a waypoint, and a 1798 survey of New Highway, now Townline Road (County Route 76), effectively divided the hamlet between Smithtown and Islip.
Townline Road is the old dividing line, and Wireless Blvd carries a different piece of history: a radio communication facility began operating there in 1936. It closed in 1986, and the street name memorializes it. At the edge of the hamlet, the Long Island Innovation Park, once called the Hauppauge Industrial Park, is Long Island's largest. More than 1,000 businesses operated there in 2017, and the workforce tops 55,000.
The hamlet is known for underground water springs, and the Nissequogue River runs through it. By straight-line distance, Central Islip station is about 1.9 miles away and Smithtown station is about 2.7 miles away.
