The hamlet is named for Nassaconsett, the principal sachem of the Nissequogue people. Historians now count him among the sachems who gave the land of present-day Smithtown to Richard Smith by deed. After Smithtown passed a law in 1768 against Algonquin-style living, the future hamlet stayed mostly a deserted stretch of pine barrens. Building Middle Country Road in the same era opened the land modestly to farming.
Two brothers figure prominently in the settlement's history. In 1904, the French immigrants Louis and Clemen Vion began coming to the Pine Barrens from Manhattan as sportsmen. By 1910 they had cleared a line of trees off Gibbs Pond Road to create Midwood Avenue, and they built their home there. A lumber yard, a general store and a post office went up in 1908. The Nesconset Fire Department followed by 1935, and the brothers chose the settlement's name from the sachem.
Growth stayed small for a while. In 1930 Nesconset had 50 residents along Lake Avenue. The 2020 census counted 13,207 residents.
Route 347, built in the 1950s, split the small hamlet center in two and set off rapid suburban growth in Smithtown's southeast corner. Shops and services shifted along Smithtown Boulevard, in the stretch from Old Nichols Road to Southern Boulevard, an area once called East Hauppauge.
Two state highways cross the hamlet: Middle Country Road (NY 25) along the north and NY 347 on a diagonal. Nesconset measures 3.8 square miles, none of it water.
Train riders can use Smithtown station, about 2.6 miles away, or St. James station, also about 2.6 miles away.
