Commack is a hamlet and census-designated place that lies in both the Town of Huntington and the Town of Smithtown. The 2020 census counted 36,536 residents. It covers 12.0 square miles, all of it land, and it is a suburban area with no walkable downtown or Main Street, much like other unincorporated Long Island places.
The name traces back to the Secatogue tribe, who lived along the South Shore. In the middle of the island, they gave their northern lands the name Winnecomac, meaning "pleasant lands." The early spelling was "Comac," and farming took hold early because the soil was fertile.
Some landmarks stand out. The Commack Methodist Church was built in 1789 as the Comac Church, and it is described as the state's oldest Methodist church structure. The Long Island Arena once hosted the Nets in their 1968-69 season, back when the team played in the American Basketball Association, and Peter Frampton recorded some tracks for Frampton Comes Alive! at a concert there. The arena came down in 1996 and a shopping center took its place. The Harned Brothers Sawmill dates to the 1840s and the Harned family has run it since the Great Depression.
Four major roads serve Commack: Jericho Turnpike, the Long Island Expressway, and the Northern State and Sunken Meadow State parkways. The historic Long Island Motor Parkway also runs through, and its spur to NY 25 later became Harned Road.
Measured in a straight line, Kings Park station is about 3.0 miles away and Northport station is about 3.4 miles away.
