Mastic sits in the southeast corner of Brookhaven Town, in central Suffolk County. The 2020 census counted 15,404 residents in an area of 4.0 square miles, about 3.9 of it land.
The hamlet was called Forge until 1893, when the name changed to Mastic. A Long Island Rail Road station was built in 1882. On July 15, 1960 the stop moved 7,010 feet west and took the name Mastic-Shirley, which the station still carries.
The Unkechaug Nation, which the state recognizes, has its Poospatuck Indian Reservation entirely within the community, at the southern end along the Forge River. At the north end, the section informally known as Manor Park runs between Sunrise Highway and Moriches-Middle Island Road, just east of Brookhaven Airport. Part of that neighborhood is in Shirley yet shares Mastic's ZIP code.
