Walter Shirley's Plan, the Tangiers Bungalows and a Cable to Europe
Shirley is a hamlet on the South Shore of Long Island, in the Town of Brookhaven, and the 2020 census counted 26,360 residents. It is named for the developer Walter T. Shirley, who imagined in the 1940s an enclave on Mastic Bay and offered 4,000 four-room homes there.
Before that, the area was called Tangiers, after William "Tangier" Smith, with a handful of summer bungalows dating from the early 1900s. Their owners mostly came from New York City looking to escape the "urban jungle." Most of the Tangiers-era buildings still stand, though hurricanes, winter storms or arson destroyed some.
Shirley is also the western end of Atlantic Crossing 1, a submarine telecommunications cable that connects the US to the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.
Smith Point Bridge, Mastic-Shirley Station and the 7th Precinct
The Smith Point Bridge is one of two bridges that link Long Island with Fire Island, giving beach goers access to the ocean without a ferry. Mastic-Shirley station is about 0.4 miles away and Yaphank-BNL station is about 3.6 miles away. Both Mastic and Shirley wanted a station, and the one they got was a compromise. The Suffolk County Police Department's 7th Precinct is based in Shirley.
The hamlet covers 11.9 square miles. East Yaphank is the name for its northern extent, which shares ZIP 11967, and the postal service accepts Shirley, Smith Point and East Yaphank for that area.
