Most of Manorville lies in the Town of Brookhaven, while the northeast corner belongs to the Town of Riverhead. Because it sits close to the Hamptons, it is nicknamed "The Gateway to the Hamptons." The 2020 census counted 14,317 residents.
For many years Manorville was a small farming community. The land once lay inside Manor St. George, a huge tract that Col. William "Tangier" Smith received in 1693 as recognition for serving as governor of Tangier in Morocco.
The name has a good story behind it. The Long Island Rail Road put up a station off Ryerson Avenue in 1844 and named it St. George's Manor. Station agent Seth Raynor, a patriot in the American Revolutionary War, disliked a name that echoed British colonial rule and painted over the sign, leaving only "Manor." The hamlet became Manorville when its post office opened in 1907.
The hamlet covers 25.5 square miles, and almost all of it is land. It sits at the western edge of the Long Island Central Pine Barrens, partly inside them. The land is heavily wooded, with some wetlands near the Peconic River in the north. Much of the northeast falls inside the "Core Preservation Area" of the Pine Barrens, which allows no more development.
Manorville lies partly on the Ronkonkoma terminal moraine, which gives slightly rolling ground. The glacial landscape includes several kettle hole ponds, and the most well-known is Punk's Hole. The 18-foot-high Shrine of Our Lady of the Island, built in 1975, looks out over Moriches Bay.
Yaphank-BNL station is about 3.7 miles away.
