Stony Brook sits on the North Shore of Long Island in the Town of Brookhaven, and the 2020 census counted 13,467 residents. Residents and visitors call it a village, yet the state has never legally incorporated it. Settlement began in the late 1600s as a satellite of Setauket, and its land was part of the 1655 purchase from the Setalcott. The earlier native name was Wopowog.
A gristmill went up in 1699 beside the water now called the Mill Pond. The structure standing now replaced it in 1751, milled grain until the 1940s, and now hosts public tours. The harbor was awkward to reach, so the hamlet stayed small. In the 1840s the painter William Sidney Mount led a push to dredge it, but the effort was dropped after the harbor filled in twice.
The LIRR arrived in the 1870s, and Stony Brook turned into a summer resort for city dwellers. Later, businessman Ward Melville began reshaping the center in 1939 with his Stony Brook Community Fund. The Stony Brook Village Center he created opened in 1941 with white clapboard shops around a green, in the manner of Colonial Williamsburg, and its post office is decorated with a big eagle whose wings flap hourly. Melville also gave land and funds that moved the university to Stony Brook.
The Stony Brook station sits on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, within the hamlet, and about 1.0 miles away on our list, while St. James station is about 2.2 miles away. Stony Brook University has a pedestrian gate on Route 25A at the station and a vehicle entrance on Nicolls Road. Route 347 forms the southern boundary, with the Smith Haven Mall nearby. The hamlet stretches about 5 miles north to south but only about 1 mile east to west. Attractions include the Long Island Museum, the William Sidney Mount House and the West Meadow Beach Historic District.
