William "Tangier" Smith of Setauket received permission in 1693 to buy a large tract on Long Island's South Shore, a reward for having been mayor of Tangier in Africa. The tract, Manor St. George, ran from the Carmans River east to the edge of Southampton, and it covered as much as 81,000 acres. Smith made his manor seat in what is now Mastic. Its northern section, which is now Ridge's south side, went by "The Swamp" or "Longswamp," and no house stood there until after the American Revolution. William Sydney Smith moved into the house in 1817 and renamed it Longwood.
By 1955 what remained of the manor sat mostly in Ridge, with Brookhaven National Laboratory and growing neighborhoods around it. Elbert Clayton Smith received Longwood's 750 acres and moved his family there from California. After he died in 1967, the estate was cut into housing developments and nearly lost, until enough noise was made for the house and 35 acres to go to Brookhaven's town government in 1974. In 1981 the Smith Estate was entered on the National Register of Historic Places.
Farther north, widower Samuel Randall of North Stonington, Connecticut, settled in 1738. He called his 4,000-acre plot "the Ridge" for its terrain, and the place was first known as Randallville before residents picked Ridge for their mail. The Randall family burial ground, close to William Floyd Parkway, holds Lt. Stephen Randall, who lived from 1736 to 1818. The hamlet counted 13,271 residents in 2020.
Ridge marks the northwest corner of the Central Pine Barrens on Long Island, and a sign in the hamlet's middle calls it the "Gateway to the Pine Barrens." The hamlet covers 13.3 square miles. The Randall burial ground lies near the William Floyd Parkway, and the manor's northern edge ran near New York State Route 25.
