People have lived in Miller Place since the 17th century, and the hamlet is named for the Miller family, whose members were among its first settlers. Setauket settlers bought the land from the Setalcott tribe in 1664, in a purchase that also covered what became Mount Sinai. In 1679 Andrew Miller, a cooper from East Hampton, bought a 30-acre plot.
The oldest house still standing belongs to William Miller, Andrew's grandson. It went up in three sections between 1720 and 1816 on North Country Road, the thoroughfare at the center of the Miller Place Historic District. The district was added to the federal register of historic places in 1976 and became the first such district in Brookhaven.
In the late 19th century the hamlet turned into a summer resort, and beach bungalows and log cabins went up for seasonal visitors. A Long Island Rail Road station opened in 1895 near Sylvan and Echo Avenues, and a fire destroyed it in 1903, and its replacement was destroyed by another fire in 1934. In 2013 an agreement was signed to turn the old rail strip into a public bicycle trail. Camp Barstow, a former camp by the beach, operated until 1980 and is now public parkland.
Miller Place sits on the North Shore of Long Island and has a two-mile section of beach.
