Bellport is a village on the South Shore of Long Island, with 2,203 residents at the 2020 census. The Bell family, early settlers, gave the village its name. Settlers from nearby Setauket bought the land in 1664 from the Unkechaug, drawn by plentiful harvests of salt hay, and the part that became Bellport was called Occumbomock Neck. Jonathan Rose, who arrived in the 1680s, was the first permanent resident.
Captain Thomas Bell, an immigrant from Scotland, bought land there in 1829, and by 1843 the village counted 30 dwellings and 200 inhabitants. He renamed it Bell-Port because he pictured a seaport, since the Old Inlet, a breach in Fire Island, gave easy access to the open ocean. That breach closed up, so Bellport turned into a tourist draw for wealthy New Yorkers arriving by railroad and coach. The last of its seven hotels shut down in the 1950s. The village was incorporated in 1910.
A Category 3 hurricane known as the Long Island Express first came ashore near Bellport on September 21, 1938.
South Country Road, also called Main St., is the village's main street, lined with antique shops, artist galleries, small inns and restaurants backed by the Bellport Chamber of Commerce. It is County Route 36. The Gateway Playhouse, a professional summer theater, has operated in Bellport since 1950. Bellport Bay, a branch of the Great South Bay, lines the village shore.
Ho Hum Beach on Fire Island is 2.2 miles from the Bellport Village Marina, across the Great South Bay, and the Whalehouse Point ferry leaves from that marina from late May to early September. Bellport station is about 1.2 miles away and Patchogue station is about 3.9 miles away. Bus routes 66 and 77 run through the village.
