A Village Rebuilt After Hurricanes and Nor'easters
Westhampton Beach is an incorporated village on the South Shore of Long Island, and the 2020 census counted 2,150 residents. It was incorporated in 1928. In 1938 the Long Island Express hurricane wiped out nearly every summer home on its barrier beach.
Erosion turned into a political issue in the 1960s. The Army Corps of Engineers began a project to protect the beaches in 1966, but it was only partly finished because state and local funding fell through, and the design itself was seriously flawed. Erosion grew worse at Westhampton Beach while the beaches up current actually grew. Through the late 1970s and the 1980s, beach homes washed away in every severe nor'easter.
A nor'easter in November 1992 wrecked more than eighty homes, and only then did the Corps start fresh repairs. In the mid-1990s the Corps relocated fifteen historic houses off the beach, and more work followed Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Three buildings appear on the National Register of Historic Places: the Crowther House, the Foster-Meeker House and the U.S. Post Office. The village covers 3.0 square miles.
