A Name That Sounds Like a Frog: Speonk From Cattle Meadows to Duck Farms
Speonk is a hamlet in the Town of Southampton, in Suffolk County. Meadows here were being leased to cattle owners from Southampton as early as 1712. Most early residents arrived from Southampton and Bridgehampton during the 1740s, when they cleared forest and started farms. Duck farms did well in the 1880s, though few lasted beyond the turn of the century.
The name came from a Native American word meaning high place. A Long Island Rail Road catalog from 1897 listed Speonk and remarked that the name sounds like a frog's call, and conductors liked to stress it when announcing the stop. Some residents pushed for Remsenburg instead, after Charles Remsen donated a new Presbyterian Church. Both names are still in use today, each covering a different part of the community.
