Patchogue is a village on the South Shore of Long Island, within the Town of Brookhaven, with 12,408 residents at the 2020 census. It stands on Patchogue Bay, which belongs to the Great South Bay. The name is believed to come from an Algonquian word, Pochaug, understood to mean a turning place or the spot where two streams separate.
The settlement counted just 75 inhabitants in 1812. Local voters chose municipal home rule, and the village incorporated in 1893. The Patchogue Theatre opened in 1923 and shut its doors in the late 1980s. The village bought the building in the mid-1990s and refurbished it completely, and the refurbished hall now seats 1,166 people. In 2019 the American Planning Association named the downtown one of four Great Neighborhoods in America.
