The Secatogue were the earliest known inhabitants. Slavic immigrants from a village in the mountains near Kadaň, then part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, founded the hamlet in 1855 and gave it that kingdom's name. Jobs were scarce in New York, so many of the men earned money as street musicians. Many of their first homes still stand on the avenues, recognizable by cross gable roofs.
Cigars gave the settlers a living. The immigrants arrived with excellent cigar-making skills, and several factories once operated in town. Albert Kovanda's factory occupied a corner at Lakeland and Smithtown Avenues, while the M. Foster Cigar Factory was at Ocean Avenue and Church Street. The industry lasted until the 1930s, when machines replaced hand work.
At the 1955 centennial the population was about 3,000. The 2020 census counted 9,852 residents. Several times residents tried to rename the hamlet, with Sayville Heights, North Sayville, Lidice and MacArthur all proposed, but none of the efforts won enough public support.
Connetquot River State Park lies inside Bohemia, and the hamlet has an equestrian culture. The preserve holds 3,473 acres of land and water and 50 miles of trails. Part of Long Island MacArthur Airport sits within the hamlet.
Central Islip and Great River lie west of Bohemia, Holbrook lies east, and four hamlets lie south: Oakdale, Sayville, West Sayville and Bayport. It covers 8.8 square miles. A short drive reaches the Sayville Ferry Service for Fire Island National Seashore.
