Oakdale is a hamlet on the South Shore of Long Island, in the Town of Islip, and the 2020 census counted 7,430 residents. The hamlet grew up around two Native American trade routes, at the spots where Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway now run. The hamlet covers 3.8 square miles in total, and Connetquot River State Park Preserve lies within it today.
The community began with a tavern run by Eliphalet "Liff" Snedecor on ground that is now inside that preserve. Snedecor's Tavern started in 1820 and drew wealthy New Yorkers who came to fish and hunt. In 1866, as the railroad arrived, his well-off customers formed the South Side Sportsmen's Club, and a race began to build the finest estates in the forests beside the Great South Bay.
William Kissam Vanderbilt built the most noted estate of the era in 1882, a 900-acre property on the Connetquot River with a 110-room wooden mansion. Fire destroyed that house on April 15, 1899, and it was rebuilt in brick and stone. Frederick Gilbert Bourne finished Indian Neck Hall in 1897, and Pepperidge Hall went up by 1888. It was razed in 1941. Jacob Ockers of Oakdale started the Bluepoint Oyster Co. in 1912, and it grew into the country's biggest oyster producer and shipper. St. John's Episcopal Church, built in 1765, ranks as the third oldest church on Long Island.
The Long Island Rail Road serves Oakdale on the Montauk Branch, and Suffolk County Transit's route 2 stops next to the Oakdale station. By straight-line distance, Oakdale station is about 0.5 miles away and Great River station is about 1.6 miles away.
Part of the Bourne estate lives on: the east end is now the West Sayville County Golf Course alongside the Long Island Maritime Museum. Great River, where William Bayard Cutting built his estate, was once west Oakdale.
