Connetquot, Youngsport and the Manor Estates
The name Great River translates "Connetquot," an Algonquian word meaning great river. The 2020 census counted 2,005 residents, and before the 1900s it was mostly home to wealthy families living on mansion estates.
For centuries the Montaukett occupied the Secatogue territory that is now the Town of Islip, and William Nicoll received a royal patent for the east end of it on November 29, 1683. His Islip Grange estate reached 50,000 acres and later became the largest manor on Long Island.
Before it was Great River, the place was Youngsport. In the 1840s the Youngs family built and repaired boats beside the Connetquot River close to the bay, and with only 21 houses around, it went by Youngsport for thirty years. William Lawrence Breeze bought the 290-acre Timber Point Farm from Nicoll in 1883, and the freight station was upgraded to a passenger depot during the summer of 1897.
