The Secatogue, part of the Algonquian family of peoples, were the earliest known residents. John Edwards of East Hampton founded Sayville and built its first home in 1761, on the northwest corner where Foster Avenue meets Edwards Street. John Greene settled the area now called West Sayville in 1767.
The post office opened on March 22, 1837, and in 1838 residents met to choose a name for it. Edwardsville and Greensville tied in the vote, and someone suggested "Seaville." The meeting clerk reportedly checked an old Bible brought from England, found "sea" spelled "s-a-y," and sent "Sayville" to Washington. A protest letter followed, but the Postmaster General answered that the name should stay, since the world had many Seavilles and no Sayvilles.
Timber and oysters made the hamlet important. After the South Side Railroad arrived in 1868 it became a summer destination, and over 30 hotels went up. Grand homes were built between 1880 and 1930, among them Meadow Croft, where John Ellis Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt's cousin, lived. It still stands within Suffolk County's San Souci Lakes Nature Preserve. The yearly carnival called Sayville Summerfest has run since 1979, and the 2020 census counted 16,569 residents.
Sayville is the starting point for ferries to Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines and Sailors Haven, which includes the Sunken Forest. Taxi and van services link the train station to those ferries. The hamlet is bounded by the bay on the south, Sunrise Highway on the north, Brown Creek on the east and Greenes Creek on the west, and Suffolk County Transit buses use Montauk Highway.
