English settlers bought land on July 30, 1656 from Chief Asharoken, head of the Matinecock tribe, and part of that land became East Northport. Two settlements grew here. Larkfield, the larger one, sat on the northern side near Vernon Valley. Clay Pitts to the south took its name from big deposits of red clay, which Europeans fired into bricks.
Farms between the two supplied produce to New York City and Brooklyn markets, and the region prospered that way in the late 18th century. The Long Island Rail Road moved its Northport station to Larkfield Road and Bellerose Avenue, and the new stop opened on January 13, 1873. It kept the Northport name, but conductors called it "East of Northport," and the area took on the label. The Larkfield Post Office became East Northport in 1910.
After World War II a housing boom turned the farmland into suburbs. As of 2025, East Northport ranks first among Town of Huntington communities by land area and third for population, behind Huntington Station and Dix Hills. The 2020 census counted 20,048 residents, and the hamlet covers 5.2 square miles.
Three fire stations serve the hamlet: one on Clay Pitts Road, one on Laurel Road and one on Larkfield Road at 9th Avenue. Genola Cemetery marks the spot where Larkfield first developed, just north of where Vernon Valley Road, Laurel Road and Larkfield Road meet.
Northport station sits only about 0.2 miles away in a straight line, and Greenlawn station is about 2.2 miles off.
