The Matinecocks called this land Opcathontyche, a name meaning "wading place creek." In 1656 Chief Asharoken sold it to three Englishmen. The settlers grazed cattle around the harbor, and the place became Great Cow Harbour. By 1837 it was being called Northport.
Shipbuilding drove the next boom. In the 1830s the village held only eight dwellings, yet by 1874 it was the most flourishing village on the North Shore, with three shipyards. The boom lasted fifty years before steel-hulled ships took over from wooden ones. Northport was incorporated as a village in 1894, making it Huntington's first incorporated village, and the 2020 census counted 7,347 people.
Rail history is part of the story too. A 2.5-mile trolley line opened in mid-April 1902 to carry commuters between Main Street and the railroad station. Its last scheduled run came on August 19, 1924, but the rails are still visible on Main Street.
Main Street starts at the Village Green and follows the harborfront. By the 1920s the old waterfront had fallen into decay, so the village bought the land and opened Northport Memorial Park in 1932.
Northport Harbor lies to the west and Long Island Sound to the north, and most of the ground is formed by the Harbor Hill Moraine's low and steep hills. The four stacks of the Northport Power Station, each 600 feet tall, can be seen from Connecticut. Just south of them, Steer's Pit is a hollow left by sand mining that began in 1923 and ended in the 1950s.
Train riders have two stops to choose from: Northport station, about 1.7 miles away, and Greenlawn station, about 2.6 miles away.
