Greenlawn was once called Old Fields. The town took its present name after the Long Island Rail Road expanded in 1871, linking it to nearby Northport and Port Jefferson. The railroad picked Greenlawn for its station, apparently to suggest a pleasant rural and suburban setting and to encourage resort trips to the beaches in Centerport.
During the 19th century the area was known for pickles, and to a lesser extent for potato and cabbage farms. Samuel Ballton, an escaped enslaved man, earned the nickname "The Pickle King" through his success gathering them. That crop is still honored each year at the Pickle Festival, run by the Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association.
Another yearly tradition is the Greenlawn Firemans Fair, held on Labor Day weekend. It dates to 1906 and is billed as both the oldest and the largest in the state of New York. The John Gardiner Farm has a house dating to the 1750s, and the historical association owns the property today. The 2020 census counted 13,661 people across 3.7 square miles.
In 1911 architect Fay Kellogg designed and supervised the Greenlawn post office, which stands east of Broadway behind the train station. Christine Frederick, a home economist, ran household experiments at her home on Cuba Hill Road.
Greenlawn station is the nearest listed stop, about 0.8 miles away, and Huntington station is about 2.4 miles off, both measured in a straight line. Residents here use the 11740 postal code.
