Holtsville is a hamlet on Long Island with a 2020 census population of 18,937. Most of it lies in the Town of Brookhaven, with the southwestern corner belonging to Islip town. An IRS processing center and the NYPA's Richard M. Flynn Power Plant are both located there.
In the late eighteenth century the area held just a few farmhouses. In 1843 the railroad put in a station called Waverly, and maps from the period show the area under that name. A second New York post office already carried that name, so in 1860 the hamlet was renamed Holtsville to honor U.S. Postmaster General Joseph Holt. By 1874 it had 15 houses and a general store. The station kept the Waverly name for a while before changing to Holtsville, likely in the 1890s, once farmers complained that their shipments were going upstate by mistake.
The Internal Revenue Service opened a processing center on a 67-acre site here in 1972. As of 2016, that center uses the lowest ZIP Code in the United States, 00501.
The Malkmes Wildlife Education and Ecology Center, built on a former landfill, works as a public zoo and ecological park inside the hamlet. It has a triple pool complex, a fitness trail, a nature preserve, buffalo, bobcats, eagles, greenhouses and a picnic area.
Drivers reach Holtsville from the Long Island Expressway, I-495, at Exit 62. County Route 19 is Patchogue-Yaphank Road and Waverly Avenue, County Route 97 is Nicolls Road, and County Route 99 is Woodside Avenue. The Holtsville train station closed in 1998. Medford station is about 2.5 miles away and Ronkonkoma station is about 3.1 miles away.
