Selden is a Brookhaven hamlet that was historically called Westfield, and farmers moving in during the mid-18th century used that name. Captain Daniel Roe, an early resident, put up a house on Middle Country Road in the years before the Revolutionary War, and Captain Daniel Roe Highway carries his name.
The current name has an odd origin. When a post office opened in 1852, an upstate community already held the name Westfield. Henry Selden, an upstate attorney, vowed to do "something handsome" for the community if it adopted his name, and the name was adopted. Whether he ever kept that promise is usually said to be unknown.
Selden counted 88 residents in 1885, along with a Presbyterian church built in 1857, and was noted for melons and early garden vegetables. Around 1897 the cross-island Bicycle Path was completed through Selden, with a stop called Wheelmen's Rest run by Albert Norton.
Telescope Hill, on the south side, had a fire lookout tower from 1919 to 1959. In 1931 real estate agents began selling small lots in "Nature's Gardens" to New York City residents. Selden had turned into a mainly suburban community by the early 1970s. The 2020 census counted 21,262 people.
Route 25, Middle Country Road, is the primary road in the hamlet and runs east to west. Middle Country Road was paved from Smithtown through Selden to Coram around 1927. The shopping centers arrived in a sequence. The first Westfield Shopping Center opened in 1972 at Middle Country and Blue Point roads, College Plaza followed in 1975 at Middle Country and Boyle roads, Selden Plaza opened in 1978, and Independence Plaza opened in 1992 beside College Plaza.
