Comsewogue, Echo and a Name Borrowed From the Railroad
Port Jefferson Station is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, and the 2020 census recorded 7,950 residents. Its first recorded name was the Native American word Comsewogue. People also used the name Echo for it. William Tooker, the first Colonial resident, was living here by 1750.
The current name arrived in 1873, when the Long Island Rail Road came through to serve nearby Port Jefferson. Farming dominated until the middle of the 1950s, when construction of Nesconset Highway opened the area to suburban growth. By the early 1970s it had become mainly suburban.
