Cranberries, Grumman Jets and a Ski Mountain That Never Happened
Calverton is a hamlet on eastern Long Island, with 5,934 residents in the 2020 census. Most of it is in the Town of Riverhead, and the mostly undeveloped part south of the Peconic River is in the Town of Brookhaven. The local Native American name was Conungum or Kanungum, which means fixed line or boundary. The stop was first called Baiting Hollow Station after the railroad reached the area in 1844. The post office opened in 1868 and took the name of Bernard J. Calvert. Until the Navy came, this was a small farming community that grew cranberries in the swampy ground along the Peconic River.
Everything changed in 1953, when the Navy bought 6,000 acres from a local farmer named Harry Edwards so Grumman could test and complete jets. The base got a 10,000-foot runway, and the bulk of Grumman's F-14 Tomcat fighters and E-2C Hawkeye aircraft passed through the plant. Nelson Rockefeller proposed in 1965 turning the base into a fourth major airport serving the New York area, but Grumman and local opposition ended that idea. In 1978, more than 1,000 acres of the base became Calverton National Cemetery.
Afterward came a run of unbuilt plans. In January 2008 Riverhead's Town Board agreed to sell the airport to Riverhead Resorts for $155 million, with a 350-foot indoor ski mountain, but on November 12, 2010, the town voted to cancel the indoor ski resort and water park. Skydive Long Island moved to the airport in 2000, and part of the base is now an industrial and office park.
