Landmarks and Local History
The Briarwood Land Company, led by Herbert A. O'Brien, began building here around 1905 or 1907 and named the area for the briars in its thick woods. The company went bankrupt, and in 1924 the land was auctioned: inside residential lots sold for $300 each and lots along the Boulevard for up to $2,800. The area also holds one of the highest points in the borough.
