Landmarks and Local History
Woodhaven began as Woodville, a workers' village laid out by John R. Pitkin in 1835. Residents asked for a post office in 1853 and changed the name to avoid confusion with a Woodville upstate. The Union Course racetrack opened in 1821 on the ground between 78th and 82nd Streets, Jamaica Avenue and Atlantic Avenue, and was the site of the first dirt racing surface.
Neir's Tavern on 78th Street opened in 1829, and some historians call it the city's oldest bar. Jamaica Avenue still has Popp's Restaurant from 1907, Manor Delicatessen from 1914 and Schmidt's Candy from 1925. Forest Park, more than 500 acres at the northern edge, holds the Forest Park Carousel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
