This is where William Howard built his hotel by the water, which he ran until a fire destroyed it in October 1907. The first houses followed in the 1920s, which is why locals call this section Old Howard Beach.
Coleman Square, Wetzel Triangle and Frank M. Charles Park are all here. The LIRR station that once stood at Coleman Square, then called Lilly Place, is now Bernard Coleman Memorial Square, and a boardwalk links the subway station there to 104th Street in Hamilton Beach.
