A Peninsula of Six Neighborhoods

The New York Times counts six distinct neighborhoods inside the area. Douglas Manor fills most of the land on the peninsula above the LIRR Port Washington Branch.

From a Greek Revival Mansion to a Planned Community

The estate passed in 1819 to the merchant Wyant Van Zandt, who built a large Greek Revival mansion, and George Douglas bought 240 acres along with it in 1835. The Rickert-Finlay Realty Company of Manhattan later bought 175 acres of the family holdings and formed an association to create a planned community. In 1997 the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Douglas Manor as a historic district.

Douglaston Hill, the oldest part of the community, was mapped in 1853 with unusually large lots, and the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission made it a historic district in December 2004. Zion Church, first used for worship in 1830, sits at the crest of the hill.

The Station Its Landowner Built

The LIRR stop sits at 235th Street and 41st Avenue, near Wainscott Avenue, with a tunnel joining its two platforms. Douglas paid for a $6,000 Queen Anne depot there in 1887, and in 1962 it gave way to a single-story Mid-Century modern building by Allan Gordon Lorimer, who lived nearby.

The Course on the High Ground

The Douglaston Park Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 67 layout of 104 acres that opened in 1927 as the North Hills Country Club. Its clubhouse, known as Douglaston Manor, is a Spanish and Mission revival structure designed by Clifford C. Wendehack. The course sits at one of the highest points in Queens, with views of the Manhattan skyline.

Consuming Responsibly Near the Course

The golf course sits inside a public park. NYC Parks rules ban smoking and vaping in city parks, beaches and pedestrian plazas. Consumption is best kept to private property.
