From Black Stump Road to Klein Farm
The road was named for a landmark tree called the Black Stump, a lightning-struck trunk that had burned down to a remnant. Springs of fresh water fed the low, wet ground southeast of old Flushing village, so those fields became known as the fresh meadows, which is where the neighborhood's name comes from.
Klein Farm, on 73rd Avenue between 194th and 195th Streets, was the last working commercial farm left in New York City. Klein Farm closed for good on November 21, 2001.
The Golf Course Under the Apartments
A golf course, the Fresh Meadow Country Club, began play on May 30, 1922. That course hosted the PGA Championship in 1930 and the US Open in 1932. New York Life Insurance Company bought the course land in February 1946. Housing there welcomed its first twenty families on September 2, 1947.
The complex and its shopping center were planned mainly around cars instead of walkers, an early example in the United States.
Getting Around Without a Subway
The neighborhood has no subway stations. The Q17 bus reaches Flushing-Main Street and the 7 train along Horace Harding Expressway and 188th Street. The Q26 bus goes to College Point by way of Hollis Court Boulevard, where our College Point delivery page picks up. The QM1 express bus to Manhattan began in 1968 as a 90-day trial.
Auburndale station on the Long Island Rail Road is close by, and its Port Washington Branch trains run to Midtown Manhattan. A railroad station opened in 1873 on Black Stump Road. The station shut on April 30, 1879, when the line was abandoned.
