The point is named for William Hallett, who settled the shore in 1652 with his wife, Elizabeth Fones. In 1814 the tip of Hallett's Point became the site of Fort Stevens, built to guard Hell Gate during the War of 1812, and the fort and its companion Castle Bogardus were among the first permanent buildings in what became Astoria.
Today the waterfront is a mix of new and old public space. Halletts Point Esplanade is a riverside public park developed by The Durst Organization beside its buildings at 10, 20 and 30 Halletts Point, with views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline. Hallets Cove Playground on Vernon Boulevard, from Main Avenue to Astoria Boulevard, earns this line from NYC Parks: one of the best views of any playground in the city.
