Near By Landmarks in Forest Hills
Forest Hills got its name in 1906, when the Cord Meyer Development Company bought six farms and renamed the land after nearby Forest Park. Two years later Margaret Sage, founder of the Russell Sage Foundation, bought 142 acres for Forest Hills Gardens. Architect Grosvenor Atterbury designed it, and each house was assembled from about 170 precast concrete panels, mostly between 1910 and 1917.
The West Side Tennis Club moved into the Gardens in 1914, and Forest Hills Stadium hosted the U.S. Open from 1915 through 1977. The LIRR station opened in 1906, and its brick courtyard and clock tower were built to match the Gardens. Austin Street is the main commercial street.
