Rego Park Landmarks and Local History
The name is a contraction. The Real Good Construction Company started building here in 1925 and took the first two letters of its first two words. The company put up 525 eight-room houses, and shops followed on Queens Boulevard and 63rd Drive in 1926. The Crescents, in the south of the neighborhood, still show the semicircular street plan that radiates from Alderton Street.
Lost Battalion Hall on Queens Boulevard was built in 1939 as a hall for veterans and honors nine companies of the 77th Infantry Division in World War I. NYC Parks says 301 soldiers were cut off in France for five days in October 1918. Since 1960 it has been a Parks community center. The art deco Rego Park Jewish Center, also opened in 1939, has carved Old Testament scenes on its facade and is on both the state and national historic registers.
